Meung Thai offers authentic Thai desserts in the heart of Bandar Sri Damansara
Since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic and resulting global travel ban, many of us have been locked in. Jirasuda Chayawatpanicha and her family have used the crisis to start a new chapter in her life that appeals to those with a craving for Thai desserts.
A regular street offering, Thai sweets and desserts are popular among both locals and tourists alike.
Chayawatpanicha started her home-based delivery dessert business in April 2020, about a month after the Movement Control Order (MCO).
“I love to cook. Whenever there was a gathering, I would bring something along to share with friends. “During the MCO, my friends wanted to pay for their orders. Since we were doing nothing at home, I agreed,” she said.
The start of her home-based business started with friends that soon spread to friends’ friends. One of them promoted her fare on her social media account and new orders started pouring in. Chayawatpanicha branded her deserts Meung Thai. “Meung” means country in Thai. Today, she has 13 sweets on her menu.
If you are on the hunt for some mouth-watering Thai sweet treats to delight your taste buds, these favorites from Meung Thai should be your next sugary pick.
Luk Chup is a traditional Thai dessert that was once only served for royalty! It is actually made from mung beans, coconut milk and sugar. An artistic touch and heaps of patience are needed as they a molded into little duckies. These yellow duckies come nestled in a box of 30, at RM2 per duck. Each piece is delicately shaped by hand and two specks of black sesame that resembles the eyes. It would be easy to dot the eye with food colour, but Jirasuda refuses to take the easy way out. Not surprisingly, these cute duckies have become a conversation piece wherever they are served.
Another popular favourite is Mango Sticky Rice (RM12 a box), which comes with half a mango carved into bite-sized cubes, three pieces of deliciously soft and fluffy sticky rice and coconut milk. Drizzle the coconut milk over the sticky rice and savour it with sweet mangoes. Incidentally, the sweetness in the coconut milk is not from sugar but from the coconut water itself. Meung Thai’s Sankhaya Pumpkin (RM10 a tub) is also a unique traditional Thai dessert enjoyed by many. The dessert gets its sweetness from coconut and pumpkin.
For those who enjoy sago, the Khanom Sago(RM10 a box) is another wonderful dessert. The homemade sago pudding comes with four to five pieces of longan, strips of fresh coconut flesh, and sweet corn pods. Khanom Tuai (RM8 a box), in a box of six, comes with a top layer of coconut resembling kuih pelita and light palm sugar at the bottom.
Chayawatpanicha’s latest addition is Khanom Tien(RM10 a box), a savoury, spicy dessert made from mung beans wrapped in a banana leaf. “It is not chilli spicy but peppery spicy,” she remarked.
“Most of our ingredients are sourced from Thailand. The glutinous rice is from northern Thailand and so are the mangoes, just to name two. I am passionate about taste and presentation,” she said.
